(AKA The Response Dance Society) is a non-profit society made up of six board members. the response. is a project based contemporary dance company dedicated to challenging how contemporary dance can be made, shown and perceived. It is a home for its founder and director to create new work that balances artistic resonance and physical spectacle.

Inspired by the ability of the human body, its physical potential and its emotional make-up the response. aims to go beyond the focus of form to create cinematic experiences using the body to create pictures, images and shapes to evoke reaction. It is a company distinguishable by the vulnerability and sensitivity portrayed in its works. Work is inspired by imperfection, mistakes, regret.

the response. aims to tell stories. It presents ordinary, recognizable characters and emotions in imaginary landscapes.

It is a reaction: to what we see, feel and hear.

the response.

PORTRAITS AND SCENES OF FEMALE CREATURES

Premiered December 7-10, 2011

Four mysterious female creatures create a world of loss and grief at sea. This physical journey begins on the surface of the sea and descends to the bottom of a nautical world as it forces its quartet of victims to come face to face with a reality they cannot change. Mythological tales of the sea and the female form act as inspiration for this new haunting full length work.

A quartet for three men and a woman, Status Quo reflects the desire for instant entertainment resulting in numbed experiences. Inspired by channel surfing and television saturation, Status Quo is a journey that combines contemporary technique with an urban aesthetic as it abruptly shifts from scene to scene, or channel to channel, leaving both the performers and audience breathless.

This intimate duet, featuring the unique athletic hybrid movement of Amber Funk Barton, balances raw energy and precise physicality with the sensitivity of touch as the performers, working as both allies and enemies investigate each other and the space that surrounds them. Hero & Heroine accepts the obvious yet challenges the emotional and physical dynamics of a relationship between a man and woman, eventually leading them to discover that their actions, whether as a regular human being or the alter ego of their dreams, has consequences.

A physical and emotional journey, RISK is an abstract narrative that follows five-twenty somethings struggling with issues of identity, vulnerability, information saturation and time.

Using Amber Funk Barton’s unique hybrid movement, RISK not only challenges its interpreters physically, but emotionally. No matter how old we become, as a human race, we are all confronted by issues that plague young people, such as bullying, addiction, unrequited love, acceptance, and peer pressure. And how we are affected as young people makes an impact on the rest of out lives. It does make one wonder: Do any of us ever really grow up?

Duration l 65 minutes (one act, no intermission)

Premiere l December 3-6, 2008

Choreography and Direction l Amber Funk Barton

Performers l Amber Funk Barton, Josh Beamish, Heather L. Gray, Josh Martin, David Raymond
